Activity 2.3 – Biosphere and Interconnections

Chapter 4 Concept Map: Chapter 7 Concept Map: Chapter 8 Concept Map: I created concept maps starting with the primary topic I had learned for 3 different chapters. The main topic will be at the top of the map, this is considered a Hierarchy style. The chapter 4 map breaks down the Sun and how it creates energy. The sun creates four major categories for Energy: Potential Energy, Kinetic Energy, Mechanical Kinetic Energy and Thermal Kinetic Energy. I then break down each energy into subcategories. For example, Potential energy creates Nuclear Potential Energy, Electrical Potential Energy, Chemical Potential Energy, Gravitational Potential Energy, Compressed Gases, and Elasticity. These are the subcategories that overall create Potential Energy. The same structure applies through the rest of the map.  Chapter 7 concept map is a breakdown of biodiversity, I was able to include the kingdoms within our biodiversity, the reasons as to why it is important and levels of organization. Activity 2.2.1 – My Daily Water Use

Image
My Daily Water Use was calculated below: 1. Using my last three months water bills, i added each months gallons then divided it by three months to get the average per month. 1480+1502+1461 = 4,443 / 3 months = 1,481 gallons/month on average.  2. I divided the average household water use per month by the number of people in my household.  1481/3 = 494 gallons/per person/per month. 3. I then divided the average gallons per person, per month, by 30 days. 494/30 = 16 gallons/per person/per day. Below is my water usage based off two different water use calculators: References:  USGS. (n.d.).  Water questions and answers: How much water does the average person use at home per day?  https://water.usgs.gov/edu/qa-home-percapita.html

Module 1.2 - A Turning Point Event for Environmental Science, Rachel Carson.

Image
1.      Point of View This documentary of Rachel Carson presents information on how this author exposed a new point of view for the world on the use of pesticides. A newly discovered pesticide was being comfortably and consistently used by man, without the concern of any risks or harm that it could have on the human body. Rachel Carson was an author who published her concerns in a book named Silent Spring. This book challenges the comfort humans had, as she warns society to be mindful of the amount used and how often we use it. 2.      Purpose This information about Rachel Carson in the documentary educates us on how she had created an environmental movement for society. This is a turning point in history as Rachel helped us better understand our relationship as humans with nature. Silent Spring changed the attitude of how our earth viewed the environment as we had been reckless and careless when it came to the use of pesticides not thinking about...

What I Think This Class Will Be About

I think environmental science will be knowledge on anything that impacts our environment. I believe we will be educated on how much our environment has been impacted over the years due to human consumption. Especially with our rapid producing, mass industries of food/clothing. We may learn ways on how to help sustain our planet earth.

What I Most Look Forward to in My Environmental Science Class

Our earth has always intrigued me but how our society impacts the sustainability of our earth concerns me. I look forward to acquiring knowledge about climate change and how i can help contribute to prevent our earth from perishing. I am excited to gain more insight on pollution control, as i know 'fast fashion' is one of the top polluting industries to our environment.
